Support Basic Needs

Understanding that access to clean, safe, reliable, and affordable energy is a fundamental need, Nicor Gas aims to extend this principle by addressing other essential needs of our customers. Our connection to the community drives our support in providing bill payment assistance and tackling issues like food, housing, and clothing insecurity. Our goal is to provide basic needs support for 250,000 families, ensuring they have access to the essential resources required to lead healthy, comfortable lives.

Nicor Gas recognizes the urgency of addressing acute needs within our communities. The Supporting Basic Needs strategic objective is designed to target areas where immediate intervention is crucial to prevent individuals from falling through the cracks. Whether it's providing food, shelter, clothing, energy assistance or disaster relief, our support aims to bridge the gap for those facing dire circumstances.

Northern Illinois Food Bank

"With Nicor Gas’ donation, we can ensure that thousands of our neighbors experiencing food insecurity have better access to the nutritious meals they need over the next five years."

Julie Yurko
President and CEO of the Northern Illinois Food Bank

Northern Illinois Food Bank Logo

Northern Illinois Food Bank serves 13 counties, bringing together manufacturers, local grocers, farmers, corporations, foundations, and individuals to donate food and funds. With the support of nearly 1,000 weekly volunteers who evaluate, repack, and distribute food, they provide 250,000 meals daily, ensuring those in need have access to nutritious food and resources. Nicor Gas has partnered with Northern Illinois Food Bank for decades, addressing immediate needs and investing in the long-term vitality of local neighborhoods.

In 2022, Nicor Gas announced a 5-year, $250,000 pledge to the Northern Illinois Food Bank. This gift supports over 22,000 families in our service area by providing vital, nutritious food options. Through our partnership, Northern Illinois Food Bank will be able to expand their holiday meal box distributions and mobile food pantry programs, bridging the meal gaps that persist across the region.

These efforts align with the broader context of food insecurity in Illinois and the United States. Feeding America's latest research reveals that more than 1.2 million individuals in Illinois currently face food insecurity, highlighting the pervasive nature of this issue across every county.

The most successful partnerships involve meaningful investments – in time and money. In addition to financial support, Nicor Gas employee groups regularly volunteer at the Northern Illinois Food Bank. Last year, employees volunteered for over 300 hours at distribution centers across northern Illinois.

Operation Warm

"Students can’t reach their maximum potential if some of those lower-level needs are not met, like food, clothing and shelter."

Angelique Malone

Operation Warm Logo

In the heart of northern Illinois, the reality of the season's harshness is felt most acutely by those without the essentials to keep warm. To address this critical need, Nicor Gas has partnered with Operation Warm to provide 1,600 new winter coats to students in need across qualifying schools.

By connecting underserved children with vital community resources, Operation Warm goes beyond the mere act of giving; it bridges families to a wider support network, from health services like flu shots to educational tools such as books.

As part of their "Warm Homes, Warmer Hearts" campaign, Nicor Gas donated a brand-new winter coat to a child in need for every smart thermostat rebate processed through the Energy Efficiency program during October. Every student at Washington Elementary School in Rockford and Medger Evers Primary Academic Center in Ford Heights received a brand-new winter coat, and an additional 800 coats were delivered to other Title I elementary schools throughout northern Illinois.

The significance of a warm coat extends beyond physical comfort; it is a catalyst for academic success and personal growth. Washington Elementary School's Principal, Angelique Malone, highlights the profound impact of meeting basic needs on student achievement. The joy and excitement visible on the students’ faces as they received their new jackets underscores the importance of community support in fostering an environment where children can thrive.

Nicor Gas has partnered with Operation Warm since 2020, providing over 6,000 coats to kids in need. This partnership is a testament to the power of collaboration, bringing together resources, compassion, and action to make a tangible difference in the lives of children and families facing the challenges of winter without adequate warmth.

The Salvation Army

Energy plays a critical role in the comfort and security of home and family life. Nicor Gas and The Salvation Army have been working together for more than 40 years to help families across northern Illinois gain access to the support they need. Our partnership with The Salvation Army dates back to 1983 when Nicor Gas established the Sharing Program – an energy assistance program for Nicor Gas customers up to 300% of the federal poverty level. Since then, The Salvation Army has coordinated the distribution of financial assistance in 37 counties across Nicor Gas’ Illinois service territory. This collaboration is a testament to our shared commitment to community welfare and understanding of the critical role energy plays in the comfort and security of home and family life.

"As the largest natural gas provider in Illinois, we are committed to helping our neighbors receive the relief and assistance they need during these cold winter months, while keeping their homes warm all season long."

Meena Beyers, Vice President of Business & Community Development, Nicor Gas

The Salvation Army Logo

In early 2021, as the country just started to recover from the Covid19 pandemic, Nicor Gas worked with The Salvation Army to provide even broader energy assistance support when we contributed $5M to establish the Shield of Caring Program. A year later, we doubled down on our commitment with an additional $5M gift, for a total commitment of $10M. The program consists of two pieces. A portion of the funding is reserved for grants to assist families who are behind on their natural gas bills due to financial hardship. The other portion is dedicated to other Salvation Army programs, helping individuals and families meet other basic needs by providing emergency housing and rental assistance, food assistance and case management.

The impact of this support has been substantial, with $3.28 million in grants helping over 14,000 customers pay their gas bills. It also provided more than 20,000 families with basic needs, including warm winter coats, food boxes, and emergency disaster services.

Protect the Environment

As part of the clean energy economy, Nicor Gas is committed to sustainability and environmental conservation. This commitment is manifested in our efforts to deliver renewable energy solutions and conserve natural spaces that enhance the well-being of our customers. By aiming to create, maintain, and sustain 10,000 acres of open space within our service area, we strive to ensure equitable access to cultural, educational, and recreational spaces, fostering a deeper connection between our communities and the environment.

Our commitment to environmental protection goes beyond words; it's a concrete demonstration of our dedication to clean air, conservation, green space preservation, and sustainable activities. Through partnerships with like-minded nonprofit organizations, we actively work towards a cleaner, more sustainable future that improves the lives of our customers and enhances community well-being.

"This grant will go a long way in serving our communities and the exciting projects we have underway, including the restoration of new native plants that are beneficial for pollinators and the monarch butterfly. None of this would be possible without the strong partnership we are proud to have with Nicor Gas."

Gareth Blakesley
Director and Chief Naturalist at Lake Katherine Nature Center & Botanic Garden

Lake Katherine

Lake Katherine Nature Center and Botanic Gardens, an 85-acre restored natural refuge in the heart of the southwest suburbs of Chicago, offers a diverse array of outdoor activities and environmental programs. Whether visitors seek hiking, cycling, nature watching, or a venue for special events, Lake Katherine provides an ideal setting to reconnect with nature and enjoy memorable experiences in the outdoors.

Nicor Gas has committed $30,000 over two years to complete woodland restoration and increase programming for senior citizens and underserved students at the Lake Katherine Nature Center, ensuring that the outdoor spaces in communities where we live and work are thriving for generations to come.

The restoration project will remove invasive buckthorn, create mowed trails, and install signage for improved access, integrating with the nearby bike trail which serves 80,000 visitors yearly. Additionally, native plants and 16 oak trees will be introduced to enhance biodiversity and support pollinator habitats.

Lake Katherine has begun collaborating with the adjacent senior center to expand programs for the local senior community and enhance interest along the Cal Sag Bike trail. With support from Nicor Gas, Lake Katherine also plans to involve five underserved schools by funding their participation in two nature center programs and installing pollinator gardens on their premises, providing access to natural areas and supporting educational initiatives.

The Morton Arboretum

The Morton Arboretum in Lisle, IL, is a renowned botanical garden and research center spanning 1,700 acres. It serves as a hub for nature education and scientific research focused on sustaining trees. With a vision for a greener world where people and trees flourish together, the Arboretum's nonprofit mission is to collect, study, display, and conserve plants to inspire learning, benefit communities, and enhance the environment.

In Partnership with Morton Arboretum, Nicor Gas is committed to Protecting the Environment through foundation and corporate financial support and through employee volunteering. In 2022, Nicor Gas made a five-year, $200,000 pledge to Morton Arboretum supporting the Chicago Region Trees Initiative (CRTI) and the STEM Pathways Program. This initiative, which includes the initial planting of 750 trees, aims to enhance public green spaces and enable equitable access to nature. In 2023, the Nicor Gas Foundation awarded an additional $100,000 grant to The Morton Arboretum's Chicago Region Trees Initiative, specifically supporting the Oak Ecosystem Recovery Program.

Tim Hermann, vice president of Gas Operations at Nicor Gas and a member of The Morton Arboretum's board of advisors, articulated the company's environmental vision. "Nicor Gas aims to sustain 10,000 acres of open land within our service area, bolster the region's tree canopy, and mitigate threats to the native ecosystem, with a particular focus on nurturing the vital oak populations in the Chicagoland area," Hermann stated. The partnership with The Morton Arboretum and the Chicago Region Trees Initiative (CRTI) is a testament to Nicor Gas's dedication to eradicating invasive species that compromise the region's oak ecosystem.

The Oak Ecosystem Recovery program is raising awareness about the critical role of oak trees, not just in Illinois but globally, where they face significant threats. Oak trees are a keystone species, integral to the ecosystem's survival, providing food and shelter to a myriad of wildlife species. Grant funds will aid in native seed collection, planting native shrubs that foster a thriving environment for local flora and fauna, supporting public landowners in combating invasive species such as buckthorn, and promoting proper management practices across parks, forest preserves, and conservation districts.

In 2022, Nicor Gas pledged $100,000 over five years to support Junior Achievement of Chicago. This commitment facilitates the expansion of vital work readiness programs to benefit communities in Will County, Kane County and Kankakee County. The focus will be on enhancing the Junior Achievement (JA) Whole School Program and the JA Reverse Job Shadow/Careers in Energy Program, with an emphasis on middle and high school students' needs. This collaboration highlights Nicor Gas's commitment to workforce development and addresses the urgent need for financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurial skills among youth in our rapidly evolving global economy.

At the heart of our partnership is the JA Whole School Program, which lays a comprehensive foundation for students from kindergarten through eighth grade. By introducing students to new material each year and building on what they learned in previous lessons, the program ensures a robust knowledge base and skill set that prepares them for both work and life. Nicor Gas employee volunteers bring this program to life, sharing their knowledge and expertise through lessons and activities, engaging students with real-world insights and experiences.

Recognizing that career decisions begin in the middle-grade years, our partnership with Junior Achievement places a strong emphasis on middle and high school career readiness programming. The JA Reverse Job Shadow Program and JA Careers in Energy Program introduce students to future career opportunities, particularly in the natural gas industry. By exposing students to STEM-related concepts and the vast array of employment opportunities within the energy sector, Nicor Gas plays a crucial role in preparing students for the 21st-century workforce.

Last year, JA of Chicago reached 2,767 students in 105 classroom presentations, several of which were delivered by Nicor Gas employee volunteers. The programs offered by Junior Achievement aim to inspire students to pursue higher education and consider a career in the energy sector. Our partnership is more than just a financial contribution; it's a commitment to the future of our community's youth. By investing in these programs, we are demonstrating our dedication to advancing the well-being of young people in the Chicago area and creating a brighter and more prosperous future for all. Through this collaboration, we can inspire the next generation to reach their full potential and thrive in today's global economy.

National Energy Education Development Project (NEED)

The National Energy Education Development (NEED) project collaborates with energy companies, agencies, and organizations to provide balanced energy programs to schools, emphasizing teacher professional development and timely curriculum materials. Nicor Gas is proud to be a founding partner of the Energizing Student Potential (ESP) Program, a collaborative educational endeavor aimed at empowering students to explore opportunities in STEM fields and cultivate their path to energy innovation. ESP is designed to assist educators in integrating energy-related concepts into school curricula, equipping both students and teachers with the necessary tools and resources to learn, explore, and share knowledge about energy within their local communities.

In 2022, Nicor Gas announced a five-year, $250,000 commitment to support the National Energy Education Development Project's Energizing Student Potential initiative in Illinois. The ESP initiative offers engaging lessons on various energy sources, electricity generation, natural gas, climate science, and energy efficiency, enriching the educational experience for 3rd to 8th-grade students within our service area. Over the course of the five-year partnership, NEED anticipates providing support to 280 schools, 450 teachers, and 65,000 students within Nicor Gas' service territory.

We recognize that investing in STEM education not only empowers students with valuable skills but also nurtures a future workforce equipped to address complex energy challenges and drive innovation in the industry.

Northern Illinois Community Initiatives

In 2021, Nicor Gas established Northern Illinois Community Initiatives (NICI) with a $20M investment from Southern Company Gas. The foundation's mission is to create a vibrant and equitable region by investing in initiatives that promote economic development and provide historically marginalized groups with the tools for economic mobility.

NICI operates on a place-based approach, ensuring that funds are directed where they are most needed. With a vision of economic opportunity for all in Northern Illinois, NICI focuses on three pillars: economic mobility, commercial development, and small business support. These pillars guide the foundation's investments into programs and initiatives that are designed to uplift communities and foster inclusive economic growth.

Last year, NICI made several significant grants to organizations making a difference in their communities.

NICI is a driving force for inclusive economic prosperity across the region. NICI's proactive approach to economic development not only provides immediate assistance, but also lays the groundwork for sustainable growth. By investing in programs that elevate economic status, bridge gaps in commercial development, and bolster small businesses, Nicor Gas and NICI are steadfast allies in the fight against economic disparity.

Chambers of Commerce and Economic Development Organizations

Nicor Gas is an important contributor to the economy – creating jobs, making investments in Illinois and contributing to the well-being of our region. As the largest natural gas distributor in the state, we play a significant role in the communities where we live, work and serve. That’s why it is so important that we maintain strong relationships with chambers of commerce and economic development organizations across the state.

In 2023, Nicor Gas was a member of 63 chambers of commerce and 25 economic development organizations. We rely on these organizations to keep us apprised of changes in the local economic landscape, and they rely on Nicor Gas to provide safe, reliable and affordable natural gas to any new or existing business.

Quad County Urban League

The Nicor Gas Career Academy

The Nicor Gas Career Academy is a free, six-week, 120-hour job readiness program that launched in 2018. The program, facilitated by long-time partner Quad County Urban League, is designed to equip participants with a comprehensive understanding of the natural gas sector, integrating core math concepts, safety protocols, technology, employability skills, and personal and professional development. The curriculum is enriched with hands-on experiences, including job shadowing at the Nicor Gas Call Center and engaging with industry professionals through mock interviews, thereby enhancing the practical skills of the participants.

This collaboration has seen remarkable achievements, welcoming its ninth cohort last year. In 2022, Nicor Gas demonstrated its continued commitment to the program by announcing a $500,000 investment over five years to support the program's ongoing success. With the active involvement of partners such as IBEW Local 19, NPL Construction Co., Miller Pipeline and Pipe Strong, the Academy has graduated nine cohorts totaling 197 students. These graduates have received industry-specific credentials and certificates, making them highly qualified for entry-level positions within the utility sector.

The Academy's success is underscored by its remarkable placement rate, with over 50% of participants securing job offers from Nicor Gas or its partners. Notably, the program emphasizes diversity and inclusion, with over 75% of its graduates coming from diverse backgrounds and almost 40% being women, thereby contributing to breaking down barriers in traditionally male-dominated fields.

The Nicor Gas Career Academy has been recognized for its innovative approach to workforce development, receiving a 2021 Impact Award from the Center for Energy Workforce Development in the "Community Partner" category. This accolade celebrates the program's effective collaboration with local communities and its significant contributions to fueling the talent pipeline in the utility industry.

Workforce Development

Our Workforce Development strategy emphasizes two primary objectives: educating future talent and recruiting new talent, thereby bridging the gap between the company and the community.

Educating Future Talent

Nicor Gas actively participates in STEM and career awareness initiatives, engaging with students from elementary to high school levels, as well as community colleges and non-profits. In 2023, employees served as ambassadors at 48 such events. The company is also a founding member of the Illinois Energy Workforce Consortium (IEWC), a collective that focuses on developing a skilled and diverse workforce for the energy industry.

Recruiting New Talent

The Nicor Gas Career Academy is a flagship six-week job-readiness program that equips participants with the necessary skills for entry-level positions in the natural gas sector. The program, offered for free and in collaboration with various partners, has successfully graduated nearly 200 individuals. It provides a comprehensive curriculum that includes mechanical concepts, basic math, reading skills, and employment readiness coaching, such as interview preparation and resume writing, to ensure participants are well-prepared for a career in the industry.

This strategy not only contributes to the development of a skilled workforce for Nicor Gas but also fosters community relations and supports the company's commitment to diversity and inclusion within the energy sector.

Nicor Gas and United Way

Our Shared History

For 70 years, Nicor Gas has partnered with United Way to advance the common good in our communities. Through company contributions, foundation gifts and employee giving, Nicor Gas and its employees contribute more than $1M each year to United Way affiliates across Northern Illinois.

With our overlapping coverage areas, United Way serves 99.7% of customers in Nicor Gas’ service territory. Funding is allocated to more than 20 affiliates to support food and energy insecurity, healthcare, education and housing initiatives. Last year, our support impacted over 130,000 individuals. The largest affiliate we partner with is United Way of Metro Chicago, and Nicor Gas has regularly been named among their Top 25 Corporate Partners. Sean Garrett, President and CEO of United Way of Metro Chicago, acknowledged the impact of collaborative efforts. "With the support of long-standing partners like Nicor Gas, we’re able to help our neighbors meet their basic needs and support our community partners' goals for equitable transformation in their neighborhoods."

Pieces of the Puzzle

Real change is possible when public entities, private companies, non-profit organizations and community members work together. United Way of Metro Chicago’s Neighborhood Network initiative puts all those puzzle pieces to work, creating a more equitable future for Northern Illinois.

The Neighborhood Network Model

Since its inception in 2013, the Neighborhood Network Initiative has championed an "inside-out," place-based approach to neighborhood transformation. A decade later, the strategy has not only gained momentum, but has also attracted millions in support from corporate and philanthropic partners, including the Nicor Gas Foundation. In March of 2023, the Nicor Gas Foundation made a $1M commitment to establish new suburban Neighborhood Networks with a focus on workforce development.

Empowering Elgin

In March 2023, United Way of Metro Chicago announced the launch of the Elgin Neighborhood Network, supported in large part by Nicor Gas. This initiative marks a significant step towards addressing the critical needs of students in School District U-46, where adversity and economic challenges have long hindered potential. The community quarterback in Elgin is the Alignment Collaborative for Education. We believe in the transformative power of education and workforce readiness and the new Elgin Neighborhood Network is ensuring that Elgin's youth have the skills and support needed to navigate a global workforce.

Expanding in the Southland

Our commitment to community transformation was further underscored in June 2023, with the expansion of United Way’s Neighborhood Network Initiative into Ford Heights/Chicago Heights, Harvey, and Park Forest/Richton Park, alongside an increased investment in Blue Island/Robbins. This expansion is part of a broader cross-sector partnership with Cook County aimed at revitalizing communities through sustainable economic development.

A Unified Vision

With the addition of these new Neighborhood Networks, United Way’s initiative now reaches 17 communities across Northern Illinois. This expansion is a clear indication of our unwavering commitment to fostering economic opportunity and enhancing the quality of life for all residents. By investing in community-driven efforts, the foundation is not only addressing immediate needs, but also laying the foundation for systemic change.

Habitat for Humanity

Smart Neighborhood™

Last year, Nicor Gas, in partnership with Habitat for Humanity, announced the development of two Smart Neighborhood communities and broke ground on a subdivision of 17 energy efficient homes in the city of Aurora, with a focus on being the first net zero, carbon-neutral, affordable neighborhood in the state. Each technology-enhanced home will be served with natural gas and supplemented by rooftop solar installations, high-efficiency building envelopes and in-home battery energy storage. Homes will also be equipped with SMART panels to monitor energy usage and insulated concrete form walls.

Smart Neighborhoods drive the integration of energy technologies within an affordable, dependable clean energy framework, leading to job creation, diverse business partnerships, economic growth, and sustainable transportation solutions.

Regional Habitat for Humanity Support

In addition to the Smart Neighborhoods initiative, Nicor Gas made a two-year, $100,000 commitment to three local Habitat for Humanity affiliates to support construction of new homes for families in DuPage, Will and McHenry counties. Our employees lend their time and talents to help build new homes for families in need. Over the years, employees’ volunteer construction efforts have benefitted 60 families in Illinois. The commitment of dollars and volunteer time reflects Nicor Gas’ belief that with affordable homeownership, families can transform their lives.

"Nicor Gas has always been committed to giving back to our community, and this neighborhood is an extremely powerful symbol of that commitment. Through this project, we not only demonstrate the important role that we play in advancing Illinois’ clean energy goals, but we put on display how dual energy solutions can create affordable, sustainable solutions for customers. Habitat for Humanity is a dream partner that shares the same values in providing first-time home buyers an affordable, resilient, sustainable future.”
