Heating assistance programs available for eligible households

October 1, 2012

NAPERVILLE, IL — With October being the start of the winter heating season, Nicor Gas is encouraging consumers to take advantage of programs available to manage their natural gas bills.

Throughout the month of October, the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is offering early enrollment for federal energy assistance funds to senior citizens and people with disabilities. Nicor Gas also offers financial assistance to eligible participants through the Nicor Gas Sharing Program, which is administered by the Salvation Army.

“These important financial assistance programs help many families each year,” said Beth Reese, president, Nicor Gas. “With winter right around the corner, it’s important for customers who need assistance to know that there is help available.”

LIHEAP’s early enrollment period will run through Oct. 31, and it allows senior citizens (60 years or older), persons with disabilities and those disconnected for non-payment the opportunity to apply for assistance before general enrollment opens to the public on Nov. 1. The program is funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the State of Illinois and is administered by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.

To qualify for LIHEAP, household monthly income may not exceed 150 percent of the federally established poverty level. For more information about LIHEAP or to locate an application agency in their area, residents can dial 2-1-1 or call 1-877-411-9276. Those who call 2-1-1 also may request a referral to one of the many other state and local energy assistance programs that are available.

The Nicor Gas Sharing Program provides one-time annual grants to qualified residential customers. Administered by the Salvation Army, the Sharing Program is funded by direct contributions from Nicor Gas’ customers and employees. Customers can make donations via their monthly gas bill payment, which Nicor Gas will match dollar-for-dollar, up to $175,000 annually.

To receive a Sharing grant, customers are required to meet income guidelines and apply in person at a local Salvation Army office. For those who have been approved for a Sharing grant, the Salvation Army will make payments to Nicor Gas on their behalf.

Another bill management program available to customers is the Nicor Gas Budget Plan. With the Budget Plan, customers are billed the same amount every month for a 12-month period. The plan helps minimize "peaks and valleys" in natural gas bills caused by winter's cold and summer's heat, making household budgeting much easier. Customers interested in signing up for the Budget Plan can call 1-888-Nicor4U (642-6748) or visit the company website.
