Nicor Gas Seeks Court Order to Complete Pipeline Work Near Site of Train Derailment
Naperville, Ill. – Sept. 28, 2017 – Nicor Gas is seeking a court order to gain access to a key existing pipeline segment that serves more than 250,000 natural gas customers in the western Cook and eastern DuPage counties of our service territory.
The pipeline replacement is part of a nine-year, Illinois Commerce Commission-approved program to modernize our core pipeline transmission system throughout Illinois. Nicor Gas contractors were in the midst of the pipeline replacement project near the site of the June 30 CN train derailment in Plainfield, Illinois. The cause of the derailment is still under federal investigation.
The existing line, which crosses beneath the CN railroad, has not been operational since June 30; nor has Nicor Gas’ contractor been allowed by CN to complete replacement of the pipeline or to reconnect the existing pipeline for temporary operations this winter. As a result of the impasse, Nicor Gas is taking the necessary step of seeking a court order against CN to ensure the work can be completed before the winter heating season.
This pipeline is required to ensure safe and reliable delivery of natural gas to more than 250,000 customers who rely on natural gas during the winter heating season. Every customer, large or small, deserves the peace of mind that their homes will be warm, their businesses will run and their families will be safe this winter.
