Frequently Asked Questions

The FAQs below should answer most anything you need to know about switching to natural gas. If not, please don't hesitate to contact your local New Business Coordinator directly. You may also call 800.730.6114, option 3, with your general inquiries or contact us via email at SwitchNow@nicorgas.com.

Why should I switch to natural gas?
Switching to natural gas means never having to worry about fuel deliveries again. The gas is delivered through a network of pipelines directly to your home. It is the cleanest-burning of all the fossil fuels, so it is environmentally friendly. And natural gas traditionally costs less than other fuels or electricity.

What appliances/equipment use natural gas?
Natural Gas is an extremely versatile fuel that can be used for an array of applications including: space heating, water heating, clothes drying, cooking, pool heating, outdoor grilling, outdoor lighting and much more.

How do I find a contractor to complete the switch work on my current appliances/equipment?
You can find HVAC (Heating, Venting and Air Conditioning) contractors in your area through an online search or in your local phone directory. As with hiring any contractor, the Better Business Bureau provides these guidelines to ensure you are provided quality work at a reasonable price:

Solicit two or three bids for the remodeling work you are planning. Do not automatically accept the lowest offer. Make sure all bids are based on the same set of specifications and materials to be used. Ask for local references and inspect the finished projects. Check to see if the contractor is a member of a professional association which has standards for members. Make sure the contractor is in compliance with all local licensing, bonding, and insurance requirements, and that any necessary building permit is obtained.

As with any business transaction, be sure to read all agreements, guarantees, and instructions before signing. Do not be pressured into signing an agreement before you are ready and you understand all terms and conditions. Make sure all oral promises are put in writing. Be wary of vaguely worded provisions, exclusions or limitations which could pose a problem later. Never sign a contract with sections left blank.

Do you offer any rebates for natural gas furnace, boiler or water heater purchases?
Yes. Visit nicorgasrebates.com or call 877.886.4239 before purchasing any products to ensure rebate eligibility.

Besides the monthly natural gas charges, what other monthly fees does Nicor Gas charge?
In addition to the natural gas commodity charge, Nicor Gas charges a fixed monthly customer fee and a variable delivery charge that is based on the amount of gas delivered to your home in a given month. You may also be assessed various state and local taxes. Read details about the Nicor Gas bill.

Can I sign up for service online?
No, not at this time. But you can find out if gas service is available at your address by filling out a Natural Gas Availability online form.

How do I get natural gas service for a home I am building?
New construction customers should call 800.730.6114, option 6, for guidance in establishing gas service for new structures.
