Residential Program Updates

Introducing the Smart Neighborhood Builder Program

The Residential New Construction offering has changed! New construction home builders in northern Illinois can receive incentives up to $825 per home through the Nicor Gas Smart Builder program. The program offers incentives to builders that leverage energy-efficient building practices and smart energy products.

Builders can select from four participation tiers to access a variety of financial incentives. Nicor Gas values its relationships with builders of all levels and supports them on their path to sustainable building.

Help your customers save even more with IRA tax credits

The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) offers federal tax credits for eligible energy efficiency improvements in residential and commercial buildings. Applicants can receive up to $1,200 per year. These credits are eligible for equipment costs only; labor doesn’t qualify. This additional benefit could help drive more energy efficient equipment upgrades by providing another savings option in addition to our rebates and incentives!

Commercial Program Updates

Industrial Assessment Center Grant Program can benefit commercial customers

Have your customer get a FREE energy assessment from the Nicor Gas Energy Efficiency Program to save even more money when they complete recommended energy saving work!

Recently, DOE funding became available as part of the Bi-partisan infrastructure law, which may help to support certain commercial efficiency projects. Grant awards are up to $300,000 per customer (covering one or multiple projects), at a 50% cost share.

Funding is available to small and medium manufacturers, including wastewater plants, and agriculture-controlled environments that meet the following criteria:

  • Under 500 employees at site
  • Gross annual sales less than $100,000,000
  • Annual utility bill between $100,000 and $3.5M

Eligible projects must have been identified by an assessment performed by a third party approved assessor, such as the Nicor Gas Energy Efficiency Program, after January 1, 2021. Projects cannot start prior to applying for the grant. This grant program will operate on a rolling basis: applications may be submitted at any time throughout the year as funds are available and will be reviewed quarterly. The next review will occur for applications submitted by October 1, 2024.

DOE Grants can be in addition to Nicor Gas EE incentives. For more information and to apply click here.

Changes to Custom offering provide more opportunity

The start of 2024 brought some critical new changes to the Custom incentive offering, which may open more opportunities for commercial projects. We have eliminated the minimum therm saving threshold, making it easier for businesses of all sizes to complete projects that may not qualify under our other programs. It also opens more doors for different types of improvements to be completed.

In addition, we’ve added an incentive for gas heat pumps under the Custom offering at $4/therm saved. GHP technology has been around a long time but has become popular again because it is highly energy efficient for commercial, industrial, and multi-family buildings. We’ve added a GHP section to the Trade Ally webpage so you can find fact sheets and webinars about GHPs to help you learn more and stay up-to-date on this technology.

Industry News

DOE announces natural gas most affordable energy source

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced that natural gas is 3.3 times more affordable than electricity and significantly more affordable than several other residential energy sources for the same amount of energy delivered. The 2023 Representative Average Unit Costs of Five Residential Energy Sources says:

Representative Average Unit Costs of Energy for Five Residential Energy Sources

“America’s natural gas is critical to American and global energy security,” said American Gas Association (AGA) President and CEO Karen Harbert. “DOE’s analysis confirms the very clear and substantial cost-advantage of natural gas. Our nation’s domestic abundance of natural gas means American customers pay a fraction of what customers pay for other energy sources here at home and see significant savings compared to energy costs globally.  Our industry invests $91 million every day to ensure our vast modern delivery infrastructure provides the reliability Americans expect.”

Emerging Technology

What are the many benefits of Gas Heat Pumps?

Nicor Gas is always looking for ways to help our customers save energy and money. One way we do this is by evaluating and advancing new products through our Emerging Technology (ET) Program, which eventually can be added to our Energy Efficiency (EE) portfolio as a rebate or another offering.

Gas Heat Pumps (GHP’s), fuel by natural gas, are being evaluated through our ET program. This highly efficient technology can achieve 140% AFUE and can provide space heating, water heating or a "combi" option that combines both. And most commercial GHPs include cooling in addition to space and water heating! While commercial GHPs are already available for larger applications, several manufacturers are now coming out with smaller residential versions.

GHP benefits may include:

  • High fuel efficiency (up to140% AFUE) provides lower operating costs
  • Reduces Green House Gas (GHG) emissions due to increased efficiency and ultra-low NOx compliance
  • Natural refrigerant with zero global warming potential (GWP)
  • No combustion or refrigerant inside
  • Only water/food grade propylene glycol mix is used to transfer heat
  • Comfortable space heating even when outdoor temperatures are as low as -40o F/C with no backup required
  • Space heating with water heating combi option
  • No chimney, duct work, or electrical panel upgrades needed in most cases

Assured Energy Solutions protect customers with health and safety measures

Our Energy Efficiency Program is intended to help Nicor Gas customers save money and energy, but recently it also helped save lives.

Assured Energy Solutions determined a customer in Harvey qualified for an assessment through our Income Eligible offering. When Mike Lundford, an Assured assessor, performed the assessment, he noticed that there were no working smoke or carbon monoxide detectors, so he installed them during the assessment.  A few weeks later, there was a fire at the home, and the detectors that were installed through this program alerted the occupants.  Everyone in the home was able to escape without injury!

A potential disaster was averted because Mike identified the need and installed these devices. That investment potentially saved several lives and that is worth reporting and celebrating! Thanks to our Trade Ally program provider, Assured Energy Solution, and their team, for helping make our customers’ homes more energy efficient and safer!

Updates to BPI certification

This update will affect weatherization contractors. Effective January 1, 2023, there are a few major changes to Building Performance Institute (BPI) certifications:

1.  The Building Science Principles (BSP) certificate is now a prerequisite for the new Building Analyst Technician certification. With a 1-2 day prep class (or self study), one must pass a 100 question online exam to earn the certificate. We are hosting a training on March 10! See below in our Training section for more information.

2. The Building Analyst certification has absorbed the Envelope Professional and been divided into two work-ready credentials: Building Analyst Technician (BA-T) and Building Analyst Professional (BA-P).

3. The BA-T covers data collection and diagnostic testing. It is awarded by passing a field exam that includes oral questions.

4. The BA-P covers the principles of using computer software to model the energy upgrade potential of a home and developing a scope of work. The BA-P is awarded by passing a written exam. The BA-T is a prerequisite for the BA-P.

The exams for the updated certifications are now available at BPI Test Centers. For more information on these changes, please visit: https://www.bpi.org/content/test-centers-updates-building-analyst-and-envelope-professional

Residential furnace rebate change effective April 1

Starting April 1, 2022, our residential 95% AFUE furnace rebate will decrease from $200 to $150. We wanted to provide the highest rebate possible for our customers during the peak heating season, and for you, when you were installing a higher volume of furnaces. This reduction is needed to help ensure funding is available for all four years of the cycle, but as always, rebates are subject to change. New applications and fact sheets reflecting this change will be available on April 1, 2022. Please inform your staff, and update any paperwork to reflect the lower rebate amount. Remember to use the updated rebate application to ensure you are offering the correct rebate amount and minimize processing delays.

Out with the old, in with the new…applications

We have added some new rebate offerings and/or revised others for 2022. Discard 2021 applications to ensure you're offering the correct rebate amount and to eliminate processing delays. All updated applications, fact sheets and other materials are available to download on our website.

Multi-family program definition change

Starting in 2022, our multi-family definition changed, and now buildings with 3 or more units are eligible for this offering. We made this change to align with other Illinois utilities and minimize confusion. Single-family and buildings with 2 units are still eligible for our residential offerings.

Quality control verification is an important part of our program

The Nicor Gas Energy Efficiency Program performs quality control verifications on all rebate applications to verify the equipment was installed, is operational and meets the eligibility requirements. The Nicor Gas team, or one of our Implementing Contractors, will contact customers directly for these efforts. Outside third-party evaluators may also contact customers for evaluation of the program. Please contact us if you or your customers have questions.
