Qualifications and Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Score at least a 12th-grade level in math & reading on the Tests of Adult Basic Education
  • Pass an extensive criminal background check and drug test
  • Pass an in-person interview
  • Attend a group orientation
  • Have a valid driver's license

About the Academy

The Nicor Gas Career Academy is a program sponsored by IBEW Local 19, Quad County Urban League, NPL, Miller Pipeline and Pipe Strong. The 6-week, free job readiness program prepares participants for careers in the utility industry.

From career pathway planning and employment readiness, interview practice and resume writing to getting familiar with the HR and hiring process at Nicor Gas, Career Academy sets students up for an exciting career and a bright future.

Natural Gas Focus

The Career Academy curriculum covers core academics including mechanical concepts, basic math and reading skills. The program also prepares students for their careers with employment readiness coaching. A few of the areas covered include:

  • Job Shadowing​

  • Tools of the Trade​

  • Meter Reading/Utility Specialist Training​

  • Avaya CCB Oracle Training​
