Nicor Gas shares spring, severe weather safety tips

Energy efficiency resources help customers save on their monthly energy bill

Naperville, Ill. – April 2, 2025 – Nicor Gas’ delivery system is designed to reliably meet customer demand, even during unpredictable spring weather that can bring wind, rain, hail, tornadoes and snow, all within 24-hours.

Some severe weather can bring high winds and heavy ice and snow that could damage above ground systems or lines. But Nicor Gas’ resilient and modernized natural gas delivery system and storage facilities are located below ground, allowing our teams to meet customers’ heating needs, even when the weather turns.   

• To help your family stay safe before, during and after a storm, please remember these important tips: Know the location of your natural gas meter and make sure it’s visible before a storm. This is crucial for safety and quick access in case of an emergency. Also, keep the area surrounding the meter free of trash and debris. Mechanical equipment used during the storm cleanup can damage an unseen meter.
• Unplug natural gas appliances. If severe lightning is predicted, unplugging these appliances can help avoid possible electrical damage.
• Leave gas meters on in homes and businesses. This helps maintain proper pipe pressure and prevents water from entering if flooding occurs. Most gas appliances have safety valves that automatically shut off the flow of gas if the pilot light goes out. Only Nicor Gas or emergency personnel should turn the valve off.
• Wait for safe conditions. If your natural gas service was interrupted due to a severe storm, restoration time depends on when water recedes in flooded areas, homes and businesses and are free of standing water before Nicor Gas personnel can safely enter. 
• Check for damage. Damage to natural gas meters or exposed gas lines is dangerous. If you notice any damage, immediately leave the area and call Nicor Gas’ 24-hour emergency response number at 888.642.6748.
• Contact 811 before digging. If any cleanup and repair are necessary, including removing downed trees, remember to call 811 as they can become entangled with natural gas lines.

In addition to severe weather safety precautions, the arrival of spring is a good time to focus on energy-efficient home improvements and activities that can help save on monthly energy bills, including: 

• Program your thermostat. Setting a programmable thermostat to a higher setting when not home can help reduce energy costs by approximately 10%. 
• Use ceiling fans. Cooling homes with ceiling fans can offset up to a four degree increase in your thermostat. Ensure blades are rotating counterclockwise to push cool air down.
• Cook outdoors. Cooking with an oven heats a home, but grilling outside is a great alternative that will help reduce natural gas use.
• Caulk air leaks .Sealing cracks and openings in a home ensures that heat does not come in or escape. Weatherizing with insulation and duct sealing can further improve a home's efficiency year-round while increasing overall comfort.
• Get an equipment tune up. Spring is a great time to have HVAC systems and water heaters inspected and tuned up. This helps prevent mechanical issues and can provide peace of mind in your equipment’s reliability.
