Nicor Gas is currently launching the Meter Modernization program throughout the more than 650 northern Illinois communities we serve. The Meter Modernization program is one of several investments Nicor Gas is making to improve customer communication and experience, and the reliability of meter reading and billing, ensuring every customer's energy needs are met safely and reliably now and well into the future.
Meter Modernization involves installing small, two-way communication devices on existing natural gas meters throughout Nicor Gas’ service territory – meters will not be replaced. These two-way communication devices feature state-of-the-art technology that will automate the meter reading process by collecting natural gas usage information and securely sending it to Nicor Gas.
- Timely and accurate billing – When activated, the device will automatically send meter readings to Nicor Gas. Bills will be based off actual usage each month, helping to eliminate estimated bills.
- Greater insight into energy usage – This automation will allow you to access more granular data about your energy usage to help you manage your costs.
Nicor Gas’ new ability to read meters without the need for a field visit will also simplify the process for customers moving to new properties and reduce the expense and environmental impact of service vehicles on the road.
